I can't use apt-get install and add-apt-repository is this normal?

I just re-installed ubuntu-13.10-x86 but I can't use those commands via PuTTY.

Is there any way I can use those?

I was trying different packages but all with the same error:

apt-get install result:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
E: Unable to locate package ubuntu-desktop

add-apt-repository result:
add-apt-repository: command not found
So yeah...

apt-get update

before running

apt-get install [package]

?

Nope and Thanks that was the solution.

It has been a long time since I used the Linux/Ubuntu terminal.

So Thanks :D
